Carolyn recieved the below e-mail and passed it onto me to share with all of you.

Happy New Year! We want to let you know that this year’s Transfer Open House is scheduled for Friday, February 19th from 12-4pm. This program will give students the opportunity to speak with people from the offices of Admission, Financial Aid, Career Services, and Student Life, as well as professors from various academic departments. Students will also be able to tour the campus with a current Emerson student. We would appreciate it very much if you would share this information with any Phi Theta Kappa students who might benefit from the academic programs here at Emerson College.

For registration and directions to campus, please visit our website at http://www.emerson.edu/admission/open_house. If you or your students are unable to attend the Open House, we invite you to visit our campus on another day. You may book an information session and tour online at http://undergraduate.visit.emerson.edu/.

Just a reminder: the deadline for fall term transfer applications is March 1st. Your students may want to start the process now so that their credentials arrive by the deadline date. For their convenience, they can apply online at http://www.emerson.edu/admission/undergraduate/admission/transfer.cfm. Once they have applied, we suggest that they check the status of their application weekly to make sure it is complete: https://interactive.emerson.edu/credcheck.

Atlantic Cape Community College’s Phi Theta Kappa Chapter, Alpha Delta Mu, has become a Five Star Chapter for the 2009-2010 year.

This program, which reflects the scholarly ideals of Phi Theta Kappa, serves as a blueprint for developing a strong chapter and for earning local, regional, and international recognition. In this program, chapters do not compete against one another. Participation encourages excellence and recognizes progress in the attainment of goals set by the chapter.

Using the Five Star Chapter Development Plan as a guide to success, chapters can enhance their working relationship with the college administration by becoming active on the campus and in the community. On a personal level, involvement in the program will educate chapter members in the importance of deadlines and organizational skills.

The strength of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society is determined by the achievements of chapters on the local level. Recognition for these achievements provides reinforcement and encourages a recommitment to chapter goals.

For this achievement, we will recieve the following Recognition:

Local
A letter will be mailed to your college president citing the significance of the chapter’s level of achievement in the Five Star Chapter Development Plan.

Regional
Your Regional Coordinator or a Headquarters representative will present the Five Star Award certificate to your chapter during your region’s annual awards presentation.

International
The names of all chapters participating in the Five Star Chapter Development Plan and their levels of achievement will be featured in the Regions Directory on Phi Theta Kappa’s website. Participating chapters will also be recognized at the International Convention.

Phi Theta Kappa’s new Honors Study Topic, The Democratization of Information: Power, Peril, and Promise, was launched in January and will be used as the focus of chapter activities through December 2011.

The new schedule, following the calendar year rather than extending from Convention to Convention, was adapted after numerous requests from advisors and chapter leaders, said Dean of Academic Affairs and Honors Programs Susan Edwards.

The new Honors Program Guide is now available on the Phi Theta Kappa website. Printed Guides for advisors and chapter presidents have been sent to chapters, along with member benefit brochures, posters and other updated chapter materials.

The Guide outlines ways that chapters may use the Topic and the 10 issues to develop and carry out Honors in Action projects, which combine the Hallmarks of Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Fellowship.

Chapters will select an issue, undertake scholarly research to learn more, and use leadership skills to develop a plan of action to make a difference. Through Honors in Action, members will “Learn, Lead and Serve.”

Because all 10 issues include a Service opportunity, the “action” component of Honors in Action, Phi Theta Kappa no longer has a designated International Service Program. Instead of focusing their Service initiatives on only one area, chapters’ Service efforts will stem from their investigation of the Honors Study Topic and will be part of their Honors in Action program.

The 10 issues related to “The Democratization of Information” that are addressed in the Guide include:

1. Definition
2. Technology
3. Individual and Community
4. Language/Communication
5. Education
6. Economy and Business
7. Government and Public Policy
8. The Arts
9. Science
10. History/Future
