The New Jersey Council of County Colleges honored Atlantic Cape Community College students Russell Mulford of Tuckahoe and Tannette Medica of Egg Harbor Township, along with 29 additional New Jersey community college students and their families at its 16th annual Phi Theta Kappa Day celebration May 6 in Trenton. The two students were selected to the 2010 All-New Jersey Academic team and received certificates and medallions.
After attending the Casino Career Institute and gaining experience in the casino industry as a table games dealer, Mulford returned to Atlantic Cape and is pursuing an associate degree in business administration. Medica, a Michigan native who dedicated nearly three years to the armed forces, will graduate with an associate degree in paralegal studies this month.
“Each year, the New Jersey Council of County Colleges hosts this program to recognize the members of the New Jersey All-State Academic Team, sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for community colleges, and the Coca-Cola Foundation,” said NJCCC President Dr. Lawrence Nespoli. “These students are recognized for their outstanding academic achievement and exceptional service to their communities as members of Phi Theta Kappa at their local community colleges.”
The New Jersey Phi Theta Kappa Day Celebration is sponsored by PSE&G. Also, 20 of New Jersey’s four-year colleges and universities have offered more than $1 million in scholarships to Phi Theta Kappa students transferring to their institutions.
Phi Theta Kappa has recognized and encouraged scholarship among community college students for 92 years while promoting the academic integrity of the associate degree program. Students with grade point averages of 3.5 or higher are invited to join Phi Theta Kappa.
The New Jersey Council of County Colleges is the state association representing New Jersey’s 19 community colleges.

Scridb filterBeach Clean Up Results
On April 24, members of Alpha Delta Mu participated in Alpha Delta Mu’s bi-annual ocean city beach cleanup at 54th street and the beach. Together, we collected trash and debris, which included barbed wire and a large pallet wit rusty nails sticking out of it.

Scridb filterThank You from the FoodBank
The Community FoodBank of New Jersey: Southern Branch recently sent a letter thanking Alpha Delta Mu chapter for its generous donation of $371.00.

The donation was the result of a large fundraiser Alpha Delta Mu held for the benefit of the FoodBank. The name of this fundraiser was “Hungry For Change”. The event consisted of showing the film Food, Inc. Following the film, we hosted a question and answer session where members of Alpha Delta mu chapter asked our panel members questions relating to healthy food options.
The panel consisted of a local organic farmer named Matthew Bruckler and Ms. Rose-Hall Wilson, a representative from the FoodBank. We had scheduled two other panel members but unfortunately they had to cancel their attendance at the last minute.
The first purpose of this event was to educate students, faculty members, and members of our community about the importance of implementing healthy options into their diet. It was further designed to show attendees that healthy food options are important to everyone but even more important to those who cannot afford to implement healthy food option into their diets.
The second purpose of this event was to raise money for the FoodBank so that it may purchase a greenhouse. This has been a goal of Alpha Delta Mu chapter’s since October when Ms. Rose Hall-Wilson attended and spoke at one of our meetings. We feel that the FoodBank people who visit the FoodBank would greatly benefit from a greenhouse.
Before, during and after the event, members of Alpha Delta Mu chapter collected donations from businesses, students, fellow Phi Theta Kappa members, and members of the general public. Those who donated were entered into a raffle where they had the chance to win one of many “green” prizes.
The Culinary Club at Atlantic Cape even donated numerous different types of herbs that they had grown from the greenhouse located on the Mays Landing campus!

Scridb filterEarth Day
On April 20th, Alpha Delta Mu chapter participated in the Student Government Association’s Earth Day event at the Mays Landing campus. As the honor society on campus, we decided it would behoove us to educate students and faculty members about both the positives and negatives of “going green”. We made numerous posters, spoke with individuals that approached our table, and answered any and all questions that we were asked. In addition, we advertised our bi-annual beach cleanup and collected monetary donations for the FoodBank.
